Reviewer note

Windows Companion for app-blocking enforcement

Chrome focus-session filtering can be tested directly with the submitted Chrome extension. The Focii Windows Companion is used to extend enforcement beyond Chrome by syncing app-blocking policy on the child's Windows device. If the companion is not installed, the Chrome extension still filters Chrome browsing, and native messaging fails safely.

What it does
  • Pairs the child's Windows device with the parent dashboard.
  • Syncs installed-app inventory so parents can choose apps to lock.
  • Applies app-blocking policy during active focus sessions.
  • Maintains local policy/cache state so enforcement can continue reliably.
System requirements
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • Administrator access for installation.
  • A Focii parent account and at least one child profile.
  • Chrome extension installed and paired on the child's Chrome profile.
Install steps
  1. Download the Windows Companion from this page or the dashboard App Locker tab.
  2. Run the installer as Administrator on the child's Windows PC.
  3. Follow the pairing prompt and enter the pairing code shown in the dashboard.
  4. Confirm the device appears online in App Locker before testing app blocking.
Uninstall and support
  • Uninstall from Windows Settings > Apps, or remove the Focii Windows Companion service from the parent Administrator account.
  • Unpair the device from the dashboard App Locker tab if it should no longer sync.

Compatibility

Supported browsers

These are the current browser support expectations for the Focii extension experience.

Google Chrome
Fully supported

Primary supported browser. All features available.

Microsoft Edge
Supported

Chromium-based Edge works with the Chrome extension via the Chrome Web Store.

Mozilla Firefox
Not supported

Firefox uses a different extension system. A Firefox extension is not currently available.

Safari
Not supported

Safari extension support requires a separate macOS/iOS build. Not currently available.

Brave
Partially supported

Brave is Chromium-based and can load the Chrome extension, but aggressive privacy shields may interfere with some features.

Security

Bypass-resistant setup

For older children or shared Windows devices, use these extra steps so Focii is enforced by Chrome policy and Windows rather than only by the visible extension UI.

Use a Standard child Windows account

Keep the parent account as Administrator and make the child account a Standard User so they cannot stop services, install other browsers, or change system policy without approval.

Force-install the Chrome extension

After the Chrome Web Store listing is approved, apply the Focii Chrome policy from the parent Administrator account so Chrome keeps the extension installed and disables normal removal.

Run App Locker as a Windows Service

Install the Windows companion through the guided setup so enforcement starts with Windows and restarts automatically if the process stops.

Lock unsupported browsers during sessions

Use App Locker to block Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera, and other browsers you do not want used during focus sessions.

Setup

Step-by-step setup

1
Create your parent account

Sign up at focii.app/register. Choose a secure password and set a 4-digit PIN - you will use your PIN to confirm session controls from the dashboard.

2
Add your child profiles

From the Children tab in the dashboard, add each child's name and optionally link their school teacher's email for weekly digest reports.

3
Install the Chrome extension

Install the Focii Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store (or load in developer mode during testing). The extension monitors browsing during active focus sessions.

4
Install the Windows companion app

On the child's Windows device, install the Focii companion app. This enables app locking, device pairing, and real-time session control from the parent dashboard.

5
Pair the device

Open the extension popup on the child's browser and sign in using your parent credentials and PIN. Select the correct child profile to pair the device.

6
Start a focus session

From the dashboard Overview tab, click "New Session", select the child and duration, and confirm with your PIN. The session begins immediately on the paired device.

7
Monitor and review

Watch live activity in the Overview tab, review blocked sites and override requests, and use AI Insights for session summaries and focus analysis.
